Dept. of International and Global History
The Department of International and Global History finds its immediate predecessor in the International Studies Group (2006–2012), which was dedicated to research in this field and to the organization of the International Studies Seminar, among other scholarly initiatives. The department’s research endeavors concentrate on the interactions among human societies and their environments, the historical evolution of the world system, and the role of institutions, actors, and processes that have shaped its trajectory. Fundamentally, it is concerned with the study—through diverse analytical perspectives—of historical phenomena that transcend national boundaries, with particular attention to Spain’s engagement in these global dynamics.
The department maintains a pronounced interdisciplinary orientation, with the aim of fostering convergence and collaborative relationships with both domestic and international centers devoted to international and global studies. Its principal objectives are as follows:
• To produce rigorous scholarly knowledge concerning an increasingly interconnected world, grounded in its historical transformation over the long, medium, and short term, and incorporating comparative and global perspectives;
• To examine international and transnational actors, networks, and interactions, as well as their influence on patterns of coexistence and conflict among various social and political communities;
• To offer a critical and well-substantiated analysis of Spain’s external relations, emphasizing the reciprocal influences between domestic developments and the international context in the course of its historical evolution;
• To encourage the international mobility of researchers and the establishment of formal and informal networks of academic collaboration;
• To provide specialized expertise and informed advice to stakeholders operating in this field, including governmental bodies, industry and business sectors, academic and research institutions, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations;
• To contribute to the ongoing professional development of diplomats and other actors engaged in external affairs;
• And to promote the dissemination of knowledge regarding global historical processes through educational programs, audiovisual media, and scholarly publications.
